One of the Few Sensible High-Spec 14″ Laptops
Proper sober design, build quality and tactile experience. I was looking for a high spec portable 14″ laptop that would not overcharge me with useless features and styling that premium gamer laptops bring such as the Zephyrus G14. This was amongst the only options and I’m very satisfied with it so far.Pros:- Good build quality- Good performance- Good screen- Windows Hello works well- One hand screen operation- Fans properly optimized- Keyboard tactility and travel is good- Speaker volume and clarity is appropriateCons:- Surface finish very prone to smudging and showing fingerprints- Only one M.2 drive bay- Does not include stylusWeight and battery life is appropriate considering the specs.

    Big upgrade
Needed something powerful enough to run Photoshop/Lightroom. Was resigned to purchase a gaming laptop that would weigh much more. Took a chance on this based on initial reviews. Great solution for my needs and pretty light. Fan is loud when in gaming mode/heavy use but I can live with that. It’s the trade off of such a small chassis and light weight. Screen is beautiful and seems to be color accurate. NVIDIA card works great with my 32inch external monitor in my office that I had used for photo editing prior to purchasing the laptop. I can also safely run in clamshell mode when at home without experiencing any heat issues.I did upgrade the internal NVME. You’ll have to use the ASUS recovery process to re-install the OS but I was expecting that. I had tried cloning the drive and the new drive was recognized but the encryption key was different so it would not boot to Windows. I could have gotten around that by disabling encryption and re-cloning but I wanted the security of data encryption. The laptop performs great with AAA games, Lightroom Classic and daily driving (browsing, Office apps). I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a good balance of performance and weight. The only drawback is that the battery isn’t that great even if you use the built in Intel graphics instead of the NVIDIA card. ASUS includes a lot of methods for reducing draw but they do not help all that much. That being said, plugs aren’t that hard to find these days and I don’t need 10 hours of battery life for my use case.

The standout feature is the size-performance, but look out for strange design decisions!
Overall, this laptop gets four stars for existing, as it is the only 14.5″ laptop with a 4070. The trouble is, the laptop’s overall design was phoned-in by Asus. It feels like just another SKU that was hurriedly developed. If there was any competing options for the price, size, and performance I would point you elsewhere. I got this device for approximately $1,650 “used” (it came in like-new condition) from Amazon, so I kept it.PROS:1. Performance to size-ratio is fantastic, nobody else does this 14.5″ form factor with a 4070. Yes, there is the G14 and Blade 14, but those are strange looking “gamer” laptops.2. The screen offers nice colors and is OLED so contrast is also good.3. The touchpad is a nice size and is responsive.4. The device stays relatively cool.5. Keyboard is fine, no real complaints. If anything there is a little dead space before the key actually actuates but it is overall good.6. There is a webcam. Quality is average, or below considering the price.7. Upgradable ram.8. Speakers are okay, not Dell XPS or Macbook level, but not awful.9. The design is very conservative and fits in a business setting.CONS:1. The screen is EXTREMELY glossy and has eye-irritating PWM flickering.2., The touchpad on my unit had a rattle out of the box that I had to fix with shims and there is a bizarre dial pad which cuts down usable space.3. The fan noise out of the box was extremely annoying, a high pitched whistle like a gym coach was behind the screen emitting the shrill noise. Also fixable if you are willing to open up the device and possibly swap fans, but WHY on a $2,000+ laptop? Also ASUS, why not allow me to set my own custom fan-curves??4. The sticker on the bottom of the laptop is peeling which looks awful. This laptop is approximately one month old, why am I having this issue?5. This laptop has a large 76wh battery, but overall battery life is not very good. Out of the box expect five hours maximum for office use. With extreme tuning such as disabling services, uninstalling bloat, no antivirus and more I get up-to 8 hours. This is not normal as other brands can squeeze more run-time out of the same parts.6. The chassis is a fingerprint magnet, plan on cleaning it every other day if you want it to look normal.

This isn’t a laptop for amateurs.
I’ve been using this laptop for a few weeks now and it’s an absolute beast. The Core i9 processor shreds through just about anything you can throw at it, and the RTX 4070 can handle gaming at high settings, even on the 120hz 2k display on this device. The keyboard and trackpad both feel good too and have a good layout. The screen looks amazing, especially when running at 120hz. The laptop is extremely well-built and feels super premium, and considering the raw power packed inside, is very thin and light. That said, unless you know you need this much computing and graphics power, you should go with a less powerful machine that’ll get you better battery life. In addition to the fact that this laptop can’t charge at full speed over the type C ports, it also gets very bad battery life. When I unplug the charger, Windows estimates I’ll get about 2.5 hours of battery under light use (web browsing, word processing, etc), even with the performance profile set to conserve battery (using the integrated graphics rather than the 4070) and the screen refresh rate reduced to 60hz. These components just slurp too much power to get good battery life. If you know this going in, and want a powerful laptop that looks sleek and professional, this is a great machine for you.
